Crunchyroll and Sony partners unveil anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends

Crunchyroll, Aniplex, and Sony partners reveal Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime adaptation, set for a 2027 release exclusively on Crunchyroll.

Crunchyroll, in partnership with Aniplex, Sony Music, and PlayStation Productions, has announced the production of an anime series based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. The adaptation draws inspiration from the hit multiplayer mode of Sucker Punch Productions’ award-winning Ghost of Tsushima video game, blending Japanese mythology with rich, cinematic storytelling.

The collaboration was unveiled during Sony Group Corporation’s press conference at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, showcasing Sony’s continued investment in expanding its intellectual properties across diverse platforms.

Star-studded production team brings the series to life

The anime series will feature direction by Takanobu Mizuno, known for his work on visually striking projects, and story composition by Gen Urobuchi of NITRO PLUS fame. Animation will be handled by KAMIKAZE DOUGA, the studio behind highly acclaimed series like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Sword Art Online.

Aniplex, a globally recognised studio, will lead the production, ensuring the adaptation captures the traditional samurai aesthetics and captivating visuals that fans of the game have come to love. Meanwhile, Sony Music will oversee the soundtrack, leveraging its renowned artist roster to create a powerful auditory experience.

“This project is a testament to the creative synergy within the Sony family,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll. “We’re uniting PlayStation Studios, PlayStation Productions, Sucker Punch Productions, Aniplex, Sony Music, and Crunchyroll to deliver a bold, groundbreaking anime adaptation. Fans will experience the game’s immersive world in a way that feels fresh and exciting.”

Expanding PlayStation IP through anime

This marks the first anime adaptation from PlayStation Productions, which has already proven successful in translating gaming properties into film and television.

Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, expressed his excitement about the project: “Ghost of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and fantastical Legends mode provide the perfect canvas for this anime series. Aniplex is the ideal partner to bring Sucker Punch Productions’ vision to life.”

The decision to adapt Ghost of Tsushima: Legends reflects Sony’s strategy of leveraging its vast entertainment divisions to reach new audiences. Tom Mackay, President of Premium Content at Sony Music Entertainment, emphasised the role of music in this collaborative effort.

“Music plays such a key role in the overall viewing experience. We’re thrilled to work alongside our Sony partners to deliver compelling content that resonates with fans globally,” Mackay said.

Exclusive release and future details

The Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime will premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Additional details, including the cast and extended creative team, will be revealed as production progresses.

This anime series aims to bring the samurai-era visuals, gripping storytelling, and mythical themes of the original game to a wider audience, marking another milestone in Sony’s unified approach to intellectual property expansion.
